SIMPLE phonic games you can play in EYFS / Kindergarten STRAIGHT AWAY!
If you are looking for some super fun, active and engaging phonics games for your children, to prepare them for phonics in Reception or Kindergarten, then this film is for you. I demonstrate some of my favourite pre-phonics games which are perfect for early learning. They’re my favourites because they’re super simple with very little preparation, they really work, and children love playing them.
Learning to listen and look carefully
When children start phonics at the beginning of Reception Class or Kindergarten, there are two skills that they need to be able to be successful as Phonics is introduced in school.
- Hearing, saying and remembering the separate spoken sounds in words (which involves listening carefully and remembering)
- Recognising and remembering the differences and similarities in letter shapes (which involves looking closely and remembering)
Listening and remembering
To be able to read and spell words using phonics, children first need to be able to hear all of the separate spoken sounds in a word (we call these phonemes). The word star would include three spoken sounds (phonemes) s-t-ar, the word sock would also include 3 separate spoken sounds (phonemes)
s-o-ck, and the word train would have 4 separate spoken sounds (phonemes) t-r-ai-n. It’s a great idea for children to be capable in doing this without the letters before rushing ahead with recognising the letters which match the spoken sounds.
Looking and remembering
The second thing that children need to be able to do is be able to distinguish and remember the difference between letter shapes. This begins by spotting the difference between basic shapes like a star and a heart, through to spotting the difference between b and d, then finally recognising the difference between two different spellings of the same spoken sound (like ai in rain and ay in play).
